SMSSAFF’s current fund-raising efforts are focused on SMSSI’s endowment fund and faculty salary assistance.
Endowment Fund The concept of an endowment fund is a pool of permanently investede assets set aside to generate a perpetual stream of financial support for SMSSI. The original donation, known as the principal or corpus, is supposed to be held in perpetuity and invested to earn income, while only a portion of that investment earnings is spent each year to support SMSSI’s operation. For instance, 75% of earnings will be set aside for operations while 25% will be plowed back to principal. All proceeds, however, of past fund-raising campaigns for the SMSSI endowment fund had been diverted to operations mainly on faculty salaries. Tuition fees and donations were not enough to sustain the operations of the school. As the late Frank Longid (link this to an article on Frank Longid) would often argue: “A-anhin pa natin ang damu kong patay na ang kabayo”. In English, this could be translated thus: what good is the grass collected, if the horse it is intended to feed, is already dead. Better to feed all the grass to the horse while it is still alive. With the coming of a God-Send, Dr. Dennis Faustino (link this to an article on Dennis Faustino), who donated a big chunk of his personal and inheritance fortune as well as services to SMSSI, the school finances have stabilized allowing SMSSAFF to once again, give some attention to the endowment fund raising concerns of the school alumni.
Salary Assistance Fund This is an emergency fund set aside to help faculty salaries catch up faster to their public school counterparts by augmenting traditional sources of funds (i. e., tuition fees, government subsidies and interest earnings of the endowment fund) to close the public-private sector salary gap. This, in effect, balances the concerns of those who believe that all funds should be allocated to all current critical needs of SMSSI; and those who argue that funds should be set aside for the long-term operations of the school. It is hoped that this will result in greater active alumni support to SMSSAFF’s fund raising efforts. Ta ma-id ma-ok-okos. Past Fund Raising Efforts In the past, fund-raising efforts of SMSSAFF were on hellping SMSSI raise funds for capital expenditures: i. e., general renovation of the school buildings dilapidated exterior (i. e., roof and wall paintings, replacement of broken windows, steps and corridor repairs), class room renovations, science/biology lab, computer lab, digitized library and school gymnasium. Scholarships, faculty chair fund-raising as well as book campaigns were likewise undertaken in support of the new school administration’s efforts to raise the bar of quality education at SMSSI to international standards. The school instituted a paradym shift in learning approach from a faculty- centered to a student-centered learning approach practiced by many schools in the more economically advanced countries of the world.
